My Students

As we embark on this school year, our students will begin envisioning how they will experience their academic journey. They will often have feelings of anxiety or apprehension being back at school after the impact of the pandemic. However, I do not want them to lose sight of the significance of an arts program.

Our student population, which is predominantly a mixture of tenacious Black and Brown youth, have persevered through many challenges this past year and I hope through the reinforcement of an enriching arts program they can continue to find value in their voices and advocacy.

My Project

As a High School Visual Arts Teacher, I specifically want to promote an awareness and appreciation for the arts, by providing my students with well-rounded art sessions that will allow them to receive a full, immersive art experience. With the proper materials, students can become more invested in the work they produce; and furthermore, also be informed about the resources professional artists use within the field.

Giving my students access to supplies, that they do not readily have access to, will give them an opportunity to explore more areas in art in which they previously may not have had before.

For example, the use of self-portrait mirrors will allow them to strengthen their observational skills in ways that they cannot from just looking at a photograph or drawing from memory. This will also allow them to see themselves in the art that they are creating. Additionally, the art easels will allow them to have a more liberating approach to their painting assignments -- giving them room to see their work from different angles. I look forward to seeing their work progress over time in our sessions and seeing them embrace what they envision!
