This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most students can tell me the definition and the difference between fiction and nonfiction text. However, when I ask them to identify the genre my students struggle to classify what they are reading. I also find that many of my students choose to read books from only one genre they like.
I teach reading and language arts to fifty three fifth graders on a daily basis.
Without a doubt, this is the most motivated group of students I have ever taught. They are very engaged in the learning process and are very vocal about what they need to succeed. They have a great way of getting me to reflect on how I teach and how to become a more effective teacher. My students and I are from a Title 1 school that houses our district's English as a Second Language program. Majority of my students speak another language at home, which include, Spanish, French, Tagalog, and Arabic.
My Project
I am requesting genre journals for my reading class. These journals define and describe the characteristics found in various genres. The journals help students to identify and analyze genre by providing space for them to write about and respond to what they are reading. There is enough space for each student to read and write about four books in each genre. I want to spend next year on a genre reading journey with my students. The students will be introduced to genre right at the beginning of the school year. The posters that I am requesting define each genre and states the characteristics found in that genre. The students will then spend the entire year reading books in each genre so that they can internalize what genre is and how to classify a text into a specific genre. The journals will help the students to track the books they read and their thoughts on each genre. The hot air balloon bulletin board set will be a visual to show show far they are on their journey.
Understanding genre is one of the weaknesses I have seen year after year with my students.
By providing them with the genre journals and posters, the students will be able to work with genre throughout the year. My goal is to have the students truly understand what genre is. Also, I want my students to be exposed to all the various genres that are out there that they may not realize exist.
