This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love reading. They are a sweet, curious, and hardworking group of kids who love school. They eagerly organize our library and work as a team. When the year began, over half read significantly below grade level. Few could name a book they enjoyed besides Pete the Cat. My students have come a long way since then but still need exposure to great children's literature and early chapter-book series.
When I look at my class, I see kids reading the same few books over and over.
When I borrow books from the city library, they beam with excitement for Mo Willems, Dr. Seuss, and nonfiction texts. Kids help each other when books are too hard and openly share what they're learning. They love read-alouds, buddy reading, and small groups. But kids need more books that match their levels and inspire personal love of reading.
My Project
Our library has some great books, but not enough. With a class so voracious for new material, I need to frequently update our selection. I asked my class what types of books they wanted, and they wrote a list of topics that don't appear in our library. They want to read about farms, Native Americans, slavery, oceans, wrestling, and so much more. They need a classroom that suits their curiosity.
Our class doesn't have the biggest library, but it has an exceptionally promising group of students.
Our school library provides books that kids can keep at home. The district provides some classic, grade-level texts. But kids need more choice, fun, and variety in reading. They need exposure to different genres as well as cultures.
This summer, I attended the Reading and Writing Project at Columbia's Teachers College. I saw Eric Litwin, the author of Pete the Cat, sing and inspire joyful reading. The session made me reflect on how much I love reading, and why I need to ignite this spark in my students. I learned how to design a diverse library that supports students approaching 3rd grade. Our class needs more series, nonfiction, early chapter books, and high-interest choices. I dream of a classroom where every student is immersed in the perfect book, whether they read pre-K or above-grade levels. Great literature opens windows to the world and holds mirrors that teach about ourselves. By providing such books, we can make our classroom a reader's paradise!
