“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” -George R.R. Martin
My freshmen start high school saying, "I hate reading!" I reply that they just need to find the book that will change their mind.
Reading a whole class novel allows students to "live" through new shared experiences in the safety of the classroom along with their peers. They can think through the actions/feelings of people in the book and discuss connections to their own life. Would they do/feel the same?
It is essential to offer books from the perspective of people students may never encounter. Reading opens the door for students to build new and affirm held beliefs about the world around them. They begin to discover who they are themselves while gaining empathy for others along the way.
