My Students

My urban school is 70% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. It is 95% children of color. 71% of students speak a language other than English at home. We welcome immigrants from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Tonga, Samoa, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Gambia, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Haiti. We also have a large African-American population, and a small number of Native students.

Despite our struggles with poverty and language barriers, the school culture is one of inclusivity, tolerance, and kindness.

We set high academic standards for every child, and through wrap-around services try to assure all needs are met. The signboard on our busy street reads: "Choose Love." We do.

My Project

I am continually searching for relevant and beautiful literature for my students to read. My world literature classes (3 groups of 10th graders) would benefit greatly from this gripping book about the war in Afghanistan as seen through the eyes of two women who lose much, but gain a rich friendship. It illuminates history, questions of feminism and religious freedom, and the values of loyalty and deep love. This book was recommended to me by a student last year as her favorite book ever, and when I read it this summer, I understood why. I want to share "1000 Splendid Suns" with my kids to help instill in them a love of great literature. I want them to read for the rest of their lives!!
