My Students

My students deserve the opportunity to be able to read, discuss and appreciate great works of literature that change the way they think about themselves and the world. "The Catcher in the Rye" and "A Raisin in the Sun" are two such novels that they should be able to experience.

My students are Ninth grade students at an Early College high school in North Carolina.

They are excited to be among the first members of their families to finish high school and go to college. They love discussing issues and take very passionate stances on real-life topics as well as on topics in literature.

My Project

"A Raisin in the Sun" is an award-winning play by Lorraine Hansberry. It is easy to relate to a family's struggle to overcome obstacles in order to achieve their piece of the American Dream. This play also provides a plethora of opportunities to explore characterization. "The Catcher in the Rye", written by Salinger, is another novel that students easily identify with; the identity crises that the main character, Holden, experiences are ones that teenagers still experience today. Furthermore, this novel in particular is valuable because it teaches teenagers how NOT to act and the consequences of making poor decisions.

My students are excited about any topic that gets them to think and discuss, and these great works of literature certainly provide plenty of those opportunities.

As an Early College High School we have a small, limited library and these works would enrich our repertoire.
