Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My art classroom is bustling with creativity and energy all day long. Even during their lunches and mine, students come in and out to work on their own project or share ideas that they've had throughout the week. My students are mindful and thoughtful, and their creativity never ceases to amaze me.

My students are typical Bronx kids, often neglected and never exposed to anything outside of school.

Sadly they are all equipped with the latest video game or tablet, but never brought to museums or art galleries, and certainly not asked what they've learned in school today or engaged in thought provoking conversation. I think that this is why I am amazed at how they can be creative and think outside the box when their exposure to the world is so limited. They are hungry for knowledge and discussions and for opportunities to create and be independent in their art process. Today's educational system unfortunately stifles their creativity by teaching them how to think one way and making less and less time for art. My school understands the importance of art, dance and theater, but lacks the funds for me to get the kind of materials that I am asking for today. My students need these materials and I hope that with your help we can get them to allow them to think outside the box.

My Project

My students' art projects vary as I teach pre-k through fifth grade. The materials that i am asking for will serve as a jumping off point to their creativity. They won't just have a box of 24 crayons, but boxes of 68 crayons. Orange? what's that? i can use Macaroni and Cheese Orange instead. The materials will be used to make sculptures, collages, paintings and multi-media projects. My art club students are currently working on making pop out books, my kindergartners on painting using primary colors to make shades of secondary ones, my second graders on communities, and my third graders are exploring art from around the world. You see the materials these materials will impact 100's of students in their creative process!!!

Art is an amazing outlet for children and adults alike, but for my students it's much more.

It's a way for them to be different and think differently, for them to interact in a way with each other that is different than in their regular classroom, they get to celebrate each other and encourage each other and inspire each other. Art class is a time when everything is possible, where even if reading or writing is hard, here you can be successful. Please help me in making this a reality.
