Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an urban one in a difficult neighborhood. Most students live on "the peninsula" and there are few ways in and few ways out. Due to the nature of where they live and their home lives, they do not get a chance to go anywhere. There are no museums and the ones in "the city" are often too hard for our students to access.

Our students come to us with a hunger to learn about the world that isn't just around them, but often don't have the means to see it.

However, It is also often hard to engage our students in activities and topics that do not interest them. They have good hearts and inquisitive minds and it is my duty to ensure that this remains.

My Project

Our students create their high school yearbooks, but only have access to broken cameras and cell phones. Money is tight and there isn't enough to purchase a good camera to take quality photos. They often come out blurry with poor lighting. With the exception of the portraits, other school event photos do not come out so great. It is hard to capture unless it is a portrait. Movement is not captured in a still. The end result is a yearbook that looks unprofessional even though a ton of work was put into it. We'd really like our students to have a quality camera to use to record events like homecoming, blood drives, senior barbeque and graduation.
