My Students

We are so very fortunate to have an adequate number of books and materials for our classroom. It is unfortunate though that our school does not have the resources to keep our collections organized and accessible for our students.

My students are an amazing group of third graders that have survived Hurricane Sandy.

Witnessing the affects of a massive storm surge both at home and in their school has really taken a toll on them. These kids, along with the rest of the student body, were relocated for two months while our school underwent the most pressing repairs. Now we are slowly progressing to a 'new normal', but there are still plenty of obvious but over-looked bumps in the road.

My Project

While we were graciously given an abundance of new books and materials for our classroom, we are now having trouble organizing and making them accessible to the kids. The shelving and bookcases that were 'salvageable' after the storm should have been replaced long ago. The shelves are warped and uneven and the backing is gone so the books are constantly falling behind them, resulting in damaged books, bumped heads and an innumerable amount of splinters! We are in need of 2 new bookcases that actually hold books.

My students need these simple bookcases so that they can get back to their learning.

It has been waylaid long enough. It is way past time to put Hurricane Sandy behind us and focus on helping these kids reach their fullest potential.
