My Students

Henry Ford summed up my class when he said :Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success." The biggest challenge this year in my kindergarten classroom has been establishing a safe and engaging classroom community.

Kindergarten has been a big year for my 21 students!

Fostering positive values and a sense of community in my students has always been the heart of my goals for my class. We have spent the last 5 months learning, observing, exploring and growing together as a class community. We started off as a group of strangers and have developed into a team of explorers and learners. As an early childhood teacher, I feel so lucky to be able to work in a school that places just as much importance on play, creativity and social/emotional growth as they do on academics. This philosophy has allowed me to focus on community building along side reading, writing and math. My class has been able to focus on problem solving, being a good friend and learning how to express themselves. I love watching my students build and create throughout the day in both academic projects as well as in ways that allow them to explore social interactions and positive relationships.

My Project

My students learn best when they feel they are part of a community, where everyone feels accepted and where individuality is encouraged. My goal is to creating a classroom community that fosters a sense of belonging where children learn how to participate in class meetings, work collaboratively, and resolve conflicts. To help my students grow into this community, we begin our day with a morning meeting. For the last 5 months we have been gathering on our old but loved rug to greet, share, sing and play. Our classroom rug is the foundation for where the students have begun to establish their classroom community. We use this rug space for literacy circles, reading time, math lessons and play. Every academic subject is an opportunity for collaboration and exploration! Our rug that has been the center of all our learning, both academic and social emotional, has seen better days and has proven not fit for a group of kindergartners who are still working on personal space and listening skills.

By creating a community of learners in the classroom, I hope to establish an environment where my students feel accepted, respected, confident and safe in their classroom.

The calming colors and letters on this new rug will bring just a bit more structure to our day that will help the center of our classroom become more productive and our learning time more focused. This rug will help us become the community of readers, writers, mathematicians, explorers, and collaborators I know we can be!
