My Students

You've heard that a picture is worth a 1,000 words, right? Well how about the activation of a million brain cells? Yep! That is right! Students can extend their learning by analyzing what to photograph during a project, then putting the results together in a photo story or a report to share!

Our rural Alaskan town is known for its beauty and outdoor recreational activities.

I believe our children are healthy and robust. Yet despite the grandeur of the sea and the mountains, we are plagued with poverty. The cost of living is high, jobs are hard to come by, and the winters put us all in survival mode. This is reflected in our student population. Teachers reach deep into their pockets to find basic necessities such as winter gloves for many kids. Our classrooms often get supplied through teachers' own pockets. To provide a quality education to our youngsters, I am reaching out to donors like you to help round out my classroom with basic tools that I know would improve student attention and learning. My approach to teaching is to keep kids alert and interested, and during our dark winters, it means offering them a variety of ways to learn. In this century of technology integration, cameras are one of the most basic tools needed--freezing moments for sharing and reflection.

My Project

This year, our school district is implementing new science and social studies standards, and several projects that my students will be doing are tied to these new standards. In social studies, my students are asked to identify local land forms and landmarks, and this nicely matches the science standard that asks them to develop a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water where we live. If I had cameras, each student team would have a "photographer" who would document the model building step-by-step. Photos would be added to student journals as well as turned into digital photo stories. I believe this is such an important part of any project. Presently, I take photos during student projects, but I would rather turn that learning over to the students themselves. I believe photography requires analysis, creativity, and evaluation, so its an added bonus to any activity. I envision students using the cameras in teams to publish evidence of their learning regularly!

Your generous donations to my students will greatly impact their learning because it will produce permanent memories and documentation of student projects, which can be shared on social networks and our classroom blog.

Cameras also allow students to create photo stories to accompany their writing and reading activities. Imagine how much richer any school project is when it can be shared digitally! Please help activate more brain cells through differentiated learning by giving students cameras!
