My Students

Help my journalism staff take photos that we can actually use! Our newspaper and yearbook publications capture the year for all of our students and staff, but so many activities take place in the gym or the auditorium or on the football field, and without a flash, those pictures are too dark to use.

We are a small school (240 in high school) in Texas, where my staff of five students works hard to capture every detail about our school year and publish them in newspaper and yearbook form.

They do an excellent job, winning numerous publication awards every year while providing a tangible copy of high school memories for all of our students. Because we are such a small staff, though, fundraising is hard and camera equipment is expensive! Right now we have only one professional camera and two lenses for it. We are working hard to raise money to purchase at least one more camera so that we can do a better job of capturing memories, but we also need to improve and increase the accessories we have so that the pictures we take look good. My kids work so hard to keep up with current publishing trends and create an affordable, creative book for students, and it is so disappointing when we end up with pictures that have good content but are too dark to see well.

My Project

This external flash will not only make creating quality publications easier for my small staff, but it will result in a better publication for the entire student body. We will be able to showcase more of our student body with pictures that are worthy of the hard work they put into football, volleyball, basketball, band, drill team, and theater. All of these events take place in areas where we really need the flash to take quality pictures, and it will allow us to include more students and more events in our publications.

My staff may be small, but they are dedicated.

Over the years, I have had a number of students who started out in journalism and went on to study journalism and/or education. Their experiences on staff helped to develop the desire to become a journalist or to teach journalism. I hate that we are so limited in what we do by tight budgets. I would like to offer them opportunities that will help them to compete for awards and scholarships on a more level playing field as the bigger schools.
