Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine if one day you woke up and you could no longer speak. Every day my students struggle to express their wants, needs, likes, dislikes, thoughts, and feelings.

The students in my classroom are amazing, fabulous, hard working kids who all have a diagnosis of Autism.

There are currently 6 students in my classroom ranging in age from 7- 9 years old. Each student in my class struggles with expressive and receptive language which impacts their ability to interact with their peers, communicate their basic needs and wants, and impacts almost every aspect of their daily life. My classroom is located in a low income area of the city and with our school districts current budget crisis funding for materials and supplies has become extremely limited this year. My students learn best when they are presented with hands on interactive materials during instruction. In addition to this, when the students are able to interact with or are presented with highly motivating materials we see a decrease in negative behaviors which can impact their learning.

My Project

Each day I enter the classroom I enter with a desire to provide quality instruction for my students. My staff and I are constantly searching for new ways to motivate and engage our students. One of the greatest challenges we face is expanding the expressive and receptive vocabulary of our students, so that they are better able to communicate with those around them. By providing vivid color images for my students I would be able to not only expand their single word vocabularies, but also their ability to comment about what they see, like, feel, and want. I would be able increase their ability to make choices and express their likes and dislikes with those around them. These materials would allow my students to increase their ability to engage with the world around them and communicate with other more effectively about it. These bright color photos will also help with categorization, associations, and other skills necessary to increase their communication abilities.

One of my favorite quotes is "Not being able to speak is not the same as having nothing to say." My students have so many things they would like to say and are not yet able to because Autism has so severely impacted their ability to communicate.

By donating to my project you will be help me give me students a voice in the world, making them more self confident, self determined people. For my students a picture truly is worth a thousand words, please help me give my students those words.
