Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach the ENL (English as a New Language) population at a Title I school on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. These students are bright and eager to learn - and for some this is their first experience in school in America! They learn best through experiential and hands-on projects and are fascinated with learning about and through technology.

Our school is a barrier free school, and we work hard to give every student the tools they need to succeed!

Our English Language Learners are approximately 10% of our school population this year and 33% of our population are students with disabilities.

My Project

My students may be new to the English language, but they carry a wealth of knowledge and experience from their lives before attending our school. Literacy Through Photography (LTP) utilizes an easily accessible artistic medium to help students develop visual and linguistic literacy. It encourages children to explore their world as they photograph scenes from their own lives and to use these images as catalysts for verbal and written expression in the form of book making, collaging, poetry - the possibilities are endless! LTP is an accessible method to teach English to all proficiency levels.

Teaching Language Through Photography provides an invaluable classroom, home, and community connection.

Photographs give teachers a glimpse into their students perspectives and lives, as well as give students a way to understand the diverse experiences of their classmates.
