This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All too often I hear my students say, "I don't know what to write about!" My fourth graders are a clever bunch, but they lack for inspiration. Furthermore, they have limited, quality experiences with the world. As a result, they have trouble writing stories that are rich in sensory details.
My fourth graders live and go to school in New York.
Many of my students are ESL (English as a Second Language) students. They are from families, who have immigrated to the U.S. from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Pakistan and Morocco. All of them receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students do not own a camera or have very little to no experience with technology. They are curious and bright, but their life experiences are limited.
My Project
The resources for this project will inspire my students to expand their horizons. I plan to take the students on field trips and neighborhood walks, so that they can experience the world around them. The students will use the camera to view and capture the world they see. These pictures will be used as a springboard for their writing as they connect visual images to text. This will also help my ESL students, as it is difficult for them to express their ideas in English.
Your donation to this project will make a huge difference in the lives of my students.
Not only will they learn how to use a camera, they will take pictures that inspire them to write and think. Life experience and learning are gifts that will stay with a student forever. Who knows, this may even inspire one or more of my students to pursue a career in photography or journalism.
