The best science classes for students are inquiry based. Laboratory exploration creates a classroom where students are engaged and retain more information. My students are highly visual learners and the more visual examples I can give the better. A camera would be a great way to get those visuals.
We are at a public high school in Hawaii.
My students have mild and moderate disabilities and all of my students qualify for special education. We are in a high poverty area with many of students qualifying for the free lunch program. Many live with single parents, relatives or foster parents. Despite these challenges, my students are bright and interested in science. I teach biology, physical science and marine science and I am hopeful that a strong science education can make higher education a reality for many of my students.
My Project
My plan for a digital camera to utilize it to create visual examples for lab steps to supplement the written instructions. For example, we will have dissection coming up. What should your specimen look like? How should your cuts be made? I could take step-by-step photographs that would show instead of tell. The students could utilize them for examples to guide their work. These materials from Hewlett-Packard would go a long way toward helping students who need reinforcement in multiple ways (written, verbal and visual).
This is a great tool that can be utilized this year and in the future.
If the students can see examples, it will really help guide them. Visual examples work best as most of my students are visual learners. While I always provide written and verbal instructions, a picture is worth a thousand words!
