My Students

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Picasso. Children have a natural sense of curiosity and wonder especially when they see a work of art that they find inspiring. Please make their room this source of joy by having famous works of art for them to see.

I teach art in a rural low poverty area in North Carolina.

My school is K-3 with 87% of the student body receiving a free lunch. My students face many challenges with poverty and a language barrier. Some in society do overlook these children because of their social-economic status. They do not have the luxuries that they see so many others have. However, I have found it a privilege and joy to become a part of these children's lives. These children want to learn just like every other child despite the challenges that they face.

My Project

My students come into my room and I see their faces light up with wonder and curiosity when they see paintings hung gallery style. For many this may by their only exposure to the world of fine art. This past year my students have learned about the works and lives of some of art's most famous. They truly soaked up the knowledge of who these people were and their contributions to the art world. I want to continue their quest for this knowledge by exposing them to as many works of art as possible and to enrich their lives. One of the most effective lessons was the "Gallery Walk". They were told of the proper etiquette when one goes to a gallery such as never touching the paintings. Each student was allowed to walk around and view the art. I would then call time and all would scatter to their favorite art piece. Each student told me why this was their favorite. Not only were they animated in their answers they begged me to let them do a report on that artist to share with their class.

I have found the paintings to be a perfect channel for my students to practice their English, public speaking, using adjectives to describe, having art critiques, and writing and reciting reports to their class.

All of this is done without them ever dreading the work. To me, this is the perfect example of the joy of learning through your passion and inspiration. Many will never have the opportunity to go to a real art gallery, so I want to give them as close to this experience as possible.
