Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade at William G. Hibbard Elementary School, located on Chicago’s northwest side. There are over 1,000 students enrolled in grades Pre-K through 6. Over 72% of the student body is Latino with 36.4% of the entire school being ELL. Students at Hibbard represent countries from all over the world, including Assyria, Bosnia, Laos, Liberia, Mexico, Somalia, and Vietnam. Whether wearing sandals, glass slippers, golden shoes or walking around with bare feet International Cinderellas are extraordinary girls that my students just have to meet. These maidens have lights that shine from within. They possess grace and beauty despite poor fashion. What beacons they are! They illuminate the lives of people whose cruelty makes them dull and ashen. Cinderellas from around the globe teach us that hard work, self-respect and true love are what we all want and need. Please put their stories into my fourth graders’ hands. I’m sure that learning of these girls’ lives will further encourage my students to read! Each of my 30 students is an English Language Learner, or ELL. They represent over 6 countries. I am convinced of the transformational properties of using materials that explore cultural diversity to demonstrate people's universal joys and concerns. I hope that these diverse Cinderella stories will fit as perfectly in my students' unique lives as the glass slippers, sandals or golden shoes fit on every Cinderella’s foot. The love of reading and its lingering effects will allow my students to live happily ever after.
