This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I just started my 14th year teaching at the same school in CPS (Chicago Public Schools) and feel lucky to be able to say that. Our enrollment is 720+ students in pk-8th grade and our racial/ethnic breakdown is 90.2% Hispanic, 2.7% Caucasian, 3.2% African-American and .2% Asian Pacific.

The students at my school are special and I feel grateful to teach them each day.

I want my students to love VIRTUAL school.

My Project

My Chicago Public School students have been learning virtually since March 2020. I am consistently impressed with how well they have adapted. Middle school students can feel self-conscious to have their cameras on, to unmute their microphone, etc. I have found Pear Deck to be the best tool for engaging students, having them respond and share their thinking and to collaborate amongst their peers.

Our students have become very comfortable with Pear Deck, but my free trial is running out.

Pear Deck is an add-on for Google Slides, which is what I teach my virtual lessons from. This add-on makes my slides interactive so that they can respond to questions, texts, graphics and ideas. I use the teacher dashboard to see responses in real time and to communicate with students.

For those that do not know, I am teaching one class of the new state mandated course called "Civics". This course is very challenging for my students and we use Pear Deck almost daily to discuss and process this difficult curriculum.
