Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in an area of low economic development. Over 90% of our students are growing up in poverty. Books and resources are scarce in their homes. But they come to school every day eager to learn and to apply their new skills.

One of the major goals we have for our students is to foster a passion for reading!

We have an after school book club where about 30 students volunteer to read. We discuss books, complete activities ties to the plots of the stories and even participate in a district wide competition that brings these students a lot of pride.

My Project

Every year our school offers a number of different after school clubs. I facilitate for our book clubs. We have about 30 students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade who volunteer to attend our meetings. They read the books, have discussions about the characters and plots as well as completing activities to help apply what they learned from the stories. The books we are requesting are Bluebonnet nominees. They are a diverse collection with fiction, non-fiction and even a graphic novel.

Our students don't have the same opportunities other kids have.

They are growing up in an environment that has been highly affected by the economic downturn. These kiddos love to read but may not have access to books at home. They can check out these books and not only read them but also share them with their families.

From the first day of school, students ask me when we are going to start book club. They are excited to read books and participate in these activities. You can help us foster a passion for reading in our students!
