Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 7th grade Reading/Language Arts in a low-income urban suburb. My school is large--over 1100 students, so funding for extras (like a novel) is sometimes an issue.

Many of my students struggle with reading. Most are reading below grade level, and they need books that hook them from the very first chapter. Independent reading for them is difficult because many lack the motivation to do so. Having enough for everyone would allow us to read together. It would take away the "chore" of reading and bring the of reading together as a class to the surface.

My idea is that if I can get my kids hooked on a book that is part of a series then they will be motivated to see what happens next, and read the others. The content and characters of the novel City of Ember are very appealing to my students. The themes in the book would bring many interesting and exciting discussions to class. I know the adventure and suspense that happens in the story would keep them interested and excited about reading.
