Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I did not imagine exactly how excited the students would be during this first week back with the materials from my very first project. They loved the comfy seating spaces!! I knew right away I needed to continue to transform the space into a welcoming, nontraditional classroom. It's a new beginning for these ninth graders and I want them to feel good about coming to English class. During the first week they are nervous. Some are scared. Some are inquisitive.

Unique items in the class help to peak their curiosities.

They come to class wanting to see what's in the baskets on the bookshelf. They ask for breaks. They smile, laugh, and interact with each other, all while their phones are put away!! I want to continue to transform the space into a more relaxed and pleasant environment to spend 90 minutes a day in.

Filling the baskets with sensory friendly items not only helps my learners with IEPS who may "need" them, they will help all learners who just like them. Hanging motivational posters and having positive affirmation cards at the ready might make a student's bad day better. The soft pillows help to make the comfy space more enjoyable. Overall, with your support, I know our classroom will eventually be a great nontraditional learning space that supports our mental health and encourages new experiences.
