My Students

Imagine making past civilizations come to life. Now this may conjure up images of savages chasing after you with grotesque masks or Chinese dragons breathing fire at you. Suppose you could understand ancient civilizations through their art and developed a newfound respect for their cultures?

Our school is a microcosm of the community in which it is located with students coming from diverse cultures.

They are highly self-motivated, and their families are very involved, taking pride in their children's accomplishments. Many are immigrants who see education as the road to success. We need specific resources in order to enhance student performance and foster an understanding of the many cultures in our school community. The beauty of art is in its ability to impart meaning to different cultures through an appreciation of the aesthetic. Art is a powerful teaching tool in this regard.

My Project

Students will be exploring the ancient civilizations of the Inca, Maya and Aztec while embossing various colored foil to create two-dimensional relief masks. Students will explore the art of Chinese brush painting using original bamboo brushes and paint. Students will learn how to use water-based art media, such as ink and watercolors on rice paper. Students will study 15th Century Ming vases and create their own still life, emphasizing design and patterns found in Chinese culture.

Learning about other cultures and past civilizations makes for a more well-rounded and tolerant individual.

My students will have the opportunity to be exposed to tools and materials they normally wouldn't. They will take pride in displaying their work and this will enhance their self-confidence.
