My Students

New York City 8th grade Algebra I students for the win! My students and I have been sent back to the virtual world - once again learning remotely due to COVID. We all loved being in school, making real connections happen in a real classroom, though we are resilient enough to overcome our temporary challenge of not being able to meet face-to-face for a while.

Over 95% of my school's population receives free lunch - the majority of students come from lower-level income households.

This hits especially hard in that some of my students struggle to consistently access remote classes and really looked forward to coming to school each day and interacting with their colleagues in a positive and constructive manner. We take this in stride and are inspired to overcome our plates full of challenges.

We just received an awesome package of support from awesome donors for basic supplies - and this project aims to build on that one. One would think that basic supplies, such as notebooks, would be provided by the districts of every school in our country, but currently, this is not the case.

My Project

We have been relegated back to the virtual world and are attempting, quite valiantly, to explore the reaches of Algebra I primarily via screen time. It has become challenging to establish a meaningful connection and this project seeks to address this.

A nice new graphing notebook for each of my students would allow us to adopt a note-taking system, that will unify our efforts to meaningfully reflect upon what we learn in a virtual class.

Also, with a uniform system of student notebooks, we will be able to better provide feedback to students to further their understandings of Algebra. With a professional, personalized notebook we will be better able to reference topics previously explored in class.
