Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever wanted to be able to "see" beyond your workplace or classroom and explore the world outside of it? Currently, I teach fifth grade students the fascinating world of Science through a program called Nature Buddies, in a Title 1 school, located in a high-need community in Florida. This program allows them the opportunity to go out and explore their community, especially the "nature" that can be found around them.

Many of our students have never experienced Science the way that it should be taught; by peaking the curiosity that is innate in all of us, but in particular children, and taking it to the level of inquiry, which is how Science starts in the first place. They've never known what it is to explore and learn to revere nature. Many of my students have faced obstacles in their lives, that many adults have faced, and yet I see them continue to strive and want to learn regardless of those obstacles. It encourages me, as their teacher, when they bring up what they have seen with their own eyes, and especially when they want to share their Science learning with their nature buddies. My students currently serve as "mini-teachers" with their buddies from Pre-K. They go on "walks" on school grounds to observe the wonderful world of nature, but once they're in the classroom they continue to voice their longing to "see" their nature buddies and implement more of what they're learning in Science. Wouldn't it be great if their young counterparts could be able to "see" their "mini-teachers" create and implement Science in their classrooms using the HP notebooks with a "lens" allowing them firsthand experience?

My student's supplies are limited, but their dreams aren't. They LOVE Science, and I can't express how much they want to share their love of Science with their nature buddies. It's one of the main things that motivate them to learn Science, and what's especially inspiring to me, is that my female students are interested too! The HP notebooks will make it possible for my students to share their Science experiences firsthand with their buddies. Using the webcam, they can take their "teaching" one step further, and through this they will encourage and enhance Science learning for future fifth graders.

Your help will ensure that my students will not "lose" their desire to learn Science, explore the world of nature, share their experiences with their "buddies" through the "lens into their classroom", and most importantly, build a foundation that will help them as they move on to my heart's desire; "greater and more wonderful" Science knowledge, as well as, caring about helping others (such as their buddies)learn to love Science!
