Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in New York. Our school is located in an area with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students are eligible for free lunch.

My students are a lively and energetic group of first graders who have a lot to say but need increased opportunities to be engaged in learning activities where they can read, write and collaborate with their peers about topics and things that are important to them.

My Project

Four simple words . . . "Tell me a story." Those four words are at the heart of the 60 Minutes award winning television news magazine. Those same words are spoken by my students every day! How I wish I could read to them all day, but with an assortment interesting and exciting books about the immigrant experience, I can!

Most, if not all, are the children of immigrants (or newly arrived immigrants themselves) from Mexico, Africa, South America or the Middle East. Many are on public assistance or from low income households. These resources will help my English language learners make connections and ultimately help them learn English as a new language. These culturally relevant books will help to build their listening, speaking, and writing skills.

This assortment of books such as, "The Keeping Quilt", by Patricia Polacco and "I'm New Here" will be read to my students and inspire them to use the crayons, bulletin board paper, stickers, tape, and pencils, to decorate and wear their very own paper crowns as they write, illustrate and share with others students about their language, family, food and traditions with class multicultural quilt that will be displayed proudly in our school.
