Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are teens on a path to success. We service adolescents who require a lot of homegrown love. We are proud to provide the educational, social and psychological supports for our students. We pride ourselves in creating a safe and respectful environment for our students to learn and succeed. At our school, our kids are at home.

Our school's heart and soul is our students and we proudly service a mixed population from all walks of life and neighborhoods in the city.

We prioritize our students' story and the community that we are stepping into to teach, versus trying to push our story into the instruction. We want our students to feel proud of their identity, and have a curriculum that reflects who they are. Our diversity is empowering, and we should have our students realizing their inner strength. I want my students to feel seen. Our students are committed to succeeding and we are committed to providing them the best environment to do it.

My Project

Students will be able to use this new class setup to re-engage and re-integrate to in-person learning. Returning to in-person learning has been a struggle for most students, who had grown accustomed to being home or their own curated space for learning. The return to school buildings has been jarring, specifically because classrooms can feel like a sterile and unwelcoming space. The traditional classroom setting has proven to be a source of disengagement and delayed integration. Our goal is to create a classroom setting that promotes collaboration, engagement and fosters long-lasting relationships between the students.

We’ve selected a number of distinct tables and chairs, to encourage different styles and sizes of discussion, as well as collaboration.

The high tables will be crucial in engaging students who struggle to focus and who would benefit from standing desks. These smaller tables also help those who are more introverted, who can first work with a peer they feel more comfortable with before expanding into larger groups. Our round tables are intended for group collaborative projects, where students can work together to build their ideas and arguments, and foster expression. The picnic tables are specifically for debates and interactive activities such as map challenges and simulations. Lastly, our square tables are for remediation and extension work, so that we can support these students further through their challenges and encourage their growth.

By creating a new flexible seating arrangement that fosters collaboration, discussion, and out of the box thinking, students will be more inclined to engage with their peers face to face, receive the supports that they need, and offer new ideas to the class.
