This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My recent immigrant students come from over 50 countries and speak over 30 languages. They are not the children of United Nations employees but of car service drivers, construction workers, and bodega owners. They are coming to school with great regularity, working as hard as they can learning in a new language while navigating a new city and country, and looking for more ways to meet new friends and practice their English.

Our school has 380 students who are all recent immigrants, come from over 52 countries, and speak over 30 languages.

Our school lacks the funding and the space to have a full after school sports schedule so with an opportunity to start a girls table tennis team presented by the PSAL (Public School Athletic League) we are very excited -- we just need the equipment!

We have so many students that desire to stay after school and to get involved in activities but with a limit to what we can offer, there is a great need that I hope to be filling.

Our administration has the funds for some table tennis tables but were not able to provide the paddles and balls for the team -- these resources will allow the girls to practice on a daily basis and then compete interscholastically against other schools in Brooklyn. We are trying to get quality paddles and balls to give the girls the best opportunity to be successful as many learn to play this sport for the first time in their lives.

Right now at our school we have 3 boys sport teams and only 2 girls teams - this new team will make the after school sports program equitable.

The last item is a carrying bag for the team shirts, paddles, and balls for when we travel to matches.
