My Students

I teach an amazing, unique group of 4th graders! My students are kind, funny, and amazing young people who have the potential to learn and grow up successfully, but lack the means necessary. They are hardworking, determined, and just want to learn about the world they live in. Most of my students come from a high poverty neighborhood in the projects of NYC and receive free or reduced-price breakfast, lunch, and after school snacks. Many of my students are English Language Learners who have moved to NYC from different countries, where English is rarely spoken at home. I also work with students with learning disabilities.

The children in my class inspire me to not only be a better teacher, but to be a better person every day.

Some of my students come from single-parent households, live with many family members in small living conditions, live in completely different states than their parents with a grandparent/grandparents, or live with an alternative guardian. Overall, my students deal with hardships that no child should have to live with. Although they may not be able to afford the everyday materials they need to be successful, they are amazing young people that deserve the world!

My Project

A lot of students enter my classroom at the beginning of 4th grade with a negative attitude towards reading. For so long, so many of them have been told they are not reading at grade level and that they can't read the books they want to read. When students have reading difficulties, they tend to become hesitant readers and could stay that way for their whole life. I refuse to let a child grow up without discovering the joy of reading.

Every year, I have the same goal: help my students learn to love reading.

I truly believe a good classroom library can change the way a young child views reading. If they can find an author or series they are interested in, a whole new world opens up for them. I take a lot of pride in my classroom library and like to keep it updated with the newest books. Even years after the leave my classroom, I still have students come borrow books from my classroom library. This project will give me new and sturdy library bins, along with new series for my wonderful 4th graders!
