Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What child does not love to read or listen to a great book? As a teacher of students with special needs, finding that spark that will capture their interest and love of learning is key. My role is to help my students become passionate about learning.

I provide special education services to some amazing students in grades K-3.

These students have a variety of needs including learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism, and severe cognitive impairments, to name a few. They face many challenges and require different modes of instruction in order for them to gain access to an education. Our school is located in a large urban city in CT. Many of the students who attend our school are English Language Learners. I have the rare opportunity of turning these students on to learning. It is a privilege to work with these special students who are near and dear to me.

My Project

This new bookcase will replace the one that is literally falling apart at the seems! I teach reading, writing, and math skills using a thematic approach. When we learn about a new theme, I provide many different books and materials that relate to that theme so that the children can read and explore the topic in a deeper and more meaningful way. the bookcase will alow me to create a more structured library space in the classroom and display books and reading materials that are visual, informative and engaging. The materials in this project will help me develop hands-on activities and lessons that will teach critical thinking skills. Our students will learn skills such as following directions, sequencing, describing, and sorting! I hope to combine reading, writing, language, and fun with these classroom activities

Students with special needs face challenges making it difficult to understand and relate to what they learn in school.

Many of my students are turned off by school because they haven't had much success. Hands-on activities, visuals, and thematic units build schema leading to confidence across the curriculum! "Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another."-- Marva Collins
