This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a special education class of kinder through fifth graders. My special education program is a blended push-in/pull-out program which means that some students come into my special education classroom and learn in small groups there while other students receive their supports in the General Education classroom while working with their teacher and typically developing peers.

Our school is just blocks away from the site of the tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Our school is in the most southern part of Silicon Valley with rural and agricultural lands surrounding our school's neighborhood. Our school also has a dual-immersion Spanish/English program which several of my students participate in. My classroom includes students of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

My Project

Over the summer my classroom got new carpet, which is fantastic, but during the installation one of the old wooden bookshelves fell over and the top was smashed, which is not fantastic at all.

Especially in a special education class, the self-esteem of children is so very important.

Damaged and broken furniture creates an image that the students of my classroom lack value or importance. New bookcases are not easy to come by. In fact I had to search and struggle to get this one and another. I teach 6 grades of special education kiddos and have a lot of materials we need more shelf space.
