My students need center activities, pillows, math manipulatives, a new rug, books, and other supplies to replace resources lost in the flood to make our classroom whole again.

My Students
My students are special because they are a group of bright eyed 1st graders who are eager to learn. They were so excited to see their new classroom and learn what activities were in store for them this school year. I saw so many smiling faces, and received so many hugs at open house and on the first day of school. We were so excited to begin a new year. Unfortunately, our city experienced record flooding that caused damage to our school and classroom.
The majority of my students and families lost their homes, vehicles, and clothing.
Some are now residing in households with multiple families or shelters with very little to call their own. Therefore, the only real sense of home and belonging will be our classroom, which was destroyed due to the flooding. We lost our whole group rug, book cases, classroom library, reading/math centers, technology, and other supplies.
Despite the sudden hardships and challenges my students face, I want our classroom to be a safe and special place with resources to promote independent and cooperative learning. They are an awesome group of students who deserve an opportunity to learn in an environment that's conducive to learning.
My Project
The materials requested will have a lasting impact on my students. So many of them have lost so much and don't know when or if they'll be able to return to the place they once called home. Being able to recreate our classroom into a special place that's filled with all the tools needed to promote independent and grouped learning will mean so much to my students. The ability to have a reading center again that's filled with books and comfy seating would be amazing. Also, having a rug for whole group lessons will give my students routines, assigned seating, and most of all a sense of normalcy. This is the area where curiosity and questioning begins and ends our lessons.
Overall, all materials requested will make our classroom an environment where learning will take place, and an opportunity for my students to forget whatever challenges their families may still be struggling with due to the flood.
