This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bronx Arts & Science Charter School scholars come from different finacial and cultural backgrounds. 85% of our school's students are from low-income families. However, these scholars are eager, enthusiastic and excited to learn more and more about music from around the world. In addition, my scholars are always looking for new things to learn about, including instruments, music genres, composers and overall different music cultures. The more they learn, the happier they get. Every music class scholars ask me, "Will we see an instrument that we have not seen before?" When I am able to bring a new instrument to class, their eyes shine with excitement, all because they have the chance to see or play an instrument with which they were unfamiliar.

My Project

I want my scholars to be able to see, listen and play real instruments. Having these young musicians experience real, tangible instruments will give them a better understanding of music created by different cultures. I want my scholars to create music using the instruments that this project will hopefully provide for them. In addition, if this project becomes a reality, these scholars will be encouraged to fall in love with the art of music, and become more creative. I would even be able to create performances with my scholars, a dream I have long held. Using CDs or digital tracks, which we have thus far been relegated to, does not allow us to create music. Playing real instrument will expose the students to a more professional environment and open up the possibility for live performances
