This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My occupational therapy students have developmental delays that inhibit their ability to independently participate in daily classroom routines and activities. These delays can affect them in a variety of ways, including: fine motor development, visual-perceptual development, hand-eye coordination, handwriting development, sensory processing abilities, and difficulties with attention.

My students love to showcase the skills they learn in the therapy room during their classroom work.

I have found that the best way for my students to learn a new skill is to practice it across a variety of modalities. This might include a developmental game, arts and crafts, gross motor play, obstacle courses, imaginary play, sensory exploration, and direct practice with a functional skill. Many of my students do not get the opportunity to practice these skills outside of the school day which makes the time we spend together in the therapy room that much more important.

My Project

Many students that receive school-based occupational therapy services have significant difficulties in learning to read and write the numbers and letters of the alphabet due to underlying deficits in visual-perceptual and visual-motor integration skills. Basic knowledge of letter and number formation is essential to a student's success in writing, reading, math, state tests, and overall confidence in their ability to learn. The supplies requested in this project will equip the occupational therapy department with the tools necessary to teach letter recognition and formation with a multi-sensory approach.

A multi-sensory approach to learning gives students with developmental delays an equal opportunity to learn and succeed in the classroom as they explore using all five senses.

The supplies requested in this project include slate boards, double-lined handwriting paper, child sized crayons and pencils, roll-a-dough letters, and stamp-and-see letters from the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. These materials allow students to practice letter and number formation across a variety of mediums that meet them at their developmental stage. Additionally, the use of various fidgets and weighted materials that are requested in this project assist students with attending and focusing during instructional times that are often a challenge for students with attention based disorders.
