My Students

My school is located in Williamsburg, New York, and celebrated for its committed teachers and uniquely rigorous academic program.

Our students are curious and enthusiastic.

They come from all five boroughs of New York City, sometimes taking 2 hours just to get an education at our school, and commit to the demanding workload required by our school. Students have led and initiated clubs, developed peer-tutoring programs, reached out to peers at other schools for athletic, academic and extracurricular programs and passed the torch from more to less experienced students.

We have unique opportunities at our school for students to shine. The students regularly give public presentations and participate in whole-class discussions. Through this, they learn to be well-spoken, poised and confident. It is a marvelous sight to witness our students develop these capacities over the course of their four years at high school.

My Project

Modeling Instruction is a research-based student-centered approach to learning science that places students in the role of the scientist as opposed to the science student. They discover, during activities and investigations, collaborate with peers on how to represent a model for the phenomenon they are investigating, then present their findings to the greater scientific community: their classroom.

This powerful method of inquiry instruction has as its backbone the WhiteBoard, a small, portable, group-sized tool students can use to communicate, collaborate and brainstorm with.

It is an extremely powerful way to transform a classroom from quiet copiers to doers, thinkers and collaborative scientists. It also is very resource-intensive, since my classroom tends to go through dry erase markers faster than any other (we have 34 scientists working, not just one!). We need funding to keep up with the supply of high quality dry erase markers this learning method requires; even with my "no doodling" policy, my students are very prolific!
