My Students

My students need a functional kitchen because they are students with mental retardation and culinary arts is part of their alternate curriculum.

My students are amazing.

I look forward to each day of work because of the smiles and greetings I receive as I approach my classroom. Although my students attend a General Education High School, I am their only academic teacher. Some of the subjects I teach in the course of a day are math, english, life skills, community awareness skills, work training skills and independent living skills. My students have such a love for learning that I am pushed each day to become a better teacher. Each morning, my students look forward to writing down the daily agenda and seeing what activities and lessons are in store for them throughout the course of the day.

My Project

The resources I have requested through this project will add the finishing touches to our classroom kitchen. The electric griddle will help students learn to make grilled cheese sandwiches and pancakes. The juicer will allow students to make their own juice to drink with their breakfast. The burners will enable students to make pasta, macaroni and cheese, instant mashed potatoes and so much more. The electric skillet will allow students to saute their own ground beef for tacos and the waffle maker will be a wonderful activity for students to make their own batter and home made waffles. The coffee urn is to help with our school based enterprise which is a cafe that serves coffee and tea to staff. These resources will allow my students to become more independent and gain self confidence in terms of their abilities to provide for themselves.

These new items will bring a tremendous amount of joy to my students as we cook. What an amazing opportunity for students to be able to squeeze their own juice, make homemade waffles, make pancakes on the griddle, and scramble eggs in their electric skillet.
