This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a second-grade ESL teacher in Brooklyn, I work with a diverse, fun, and inspiring group of learners.

Every day that my students join me for class, they are prepared not only to practice math, learn how to read, and work on their writing, but also to improve their English language.

Most of my students are English language learners and many of them are new to the US. In my classroom, you may hear students speaking Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic. I work in a Title I school in which ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning their family income is below the poverty line. In order to support their learning in both academics and English, my students require hands-on and visual materials.

My Project

This upcoming school year, NYC will be starting off the year fully in-person learning. After sixteen difficult months, my students will need a supportive and calming classroom environment to learn in.

My project aims to ease students' transition from remote to fully in-person learning by creating a calm, mindful classroom.

Many of my students have not been in school since March of 2020. This will be a scary transition for students whose families have been impacted by COVID. My hope is to ease the transition by building a classroom with calming color tones. I also would like to decorate the room with self-portraits of the students using appropriate skin tones. I hope that students will be able to see this room as their own!
