Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English to 4 diverse classes of 9th and 10th grade English Language Learners in New York. My students are all newcomers having been in the United States for less than four years. They come from all over the world, from a wide variety of countries such as Yemen, Haiti, Pakistan, Tibet, Ecuador and Burkina Faso. In my classroom, there are over 15 languages spoken including Urdu, Arabic, Haitian Creole and Albanian. Our 9th and 10th grade classes are mixed together meaning that I teach a 2-year curriculum. I am lucky to teach the same set of students for two years so that I can watch their English Language abilities progress.

I love to expose my English Language Learners to the world of William Shakespeare. Teaching English Language Learners means giving students the opportunity to use the English language in an authentic and challenging context. To that end, the use of Shakespearian language and performance has been an effective strategy for providing my students with opportunities to help them both acquire and improve their English Language skills. Last year we read and performed William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” After we thoroughly and thoughtfully read and analyzed the text, my students’ final project was to perform a scene from the play. They interpreted “a scene” in a myriad of ways. One group performed an elaborately choreographed opening fight scene in the original Shakespearian language. Another group went Hollywood and changed the setting to our high school where Romeo was the captain of the soccer team and Juliet was a nerdy math club president. A pair of students, a Haitian boy and a Dominican girl performed a weepy, multilingual balcony scene in their native languages of Haitian Creole, Spanish and French, “Buena noche! Bonne nuit! La séparation est tant de douleur douce!”

This year my students have already expressed interest in reading and performing more Shakespeare. I would like to continue my students’ much needed exposure to Shakespeare by reading and performing “Midsummer Night’s Dream” with my English Language Learners. However, to make the life and the language of Shakespeare accessible to all of my learners I will need a variety of Shakespeare texts ranging from the original text, to dual language to graphic novel and picture book versions. Having multiple texts and access points available in the classroom for reference was one of the elements that made the students’ experience of performing “Romeo and Juliet” such a successful project.

Because of you they will experience the joys of Shakespeare early and go to college being more that adequately prepared to tackle difficult texts, including Shakespeare. Your help will ensure that my students will never be at a disadvantage when it comes to being able to read and interpret Shakespeare just because English is not their first language.
