Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from one of the most diverse and dynamic neighborhoods in New York City, a neighborhood bursting with new businesses and hip residents. Despite this, my students walk out of their public housing units and are confronted with poverty, inequality, segregation, gangs, and violence. All of this happens just a few blocks away from a hip cafes and brand new apartment buildings. These little ten-year-olds live the inequality we hear about all the time. We might not be able to solve this blatant disparity in their childhood, but through education we can equip their fight to become leaders and change our world for the better.

Their fight isn't an easy one.

It requires leaving all the stress of their home lives at the door and walking in ready to take risks and persevere in their studies. It requires living in a world where they have to prove themselves more just because of the color of their skin. They do it anyway. I hold high expectations for my students, and they reach them time and again. These kids are wide-eyed, passionate learners, and, with your help, future leaders.

My Project

Stephen King once said, "Books are a uniquely portable magic." Unfortunately, this magic is lost to many of my students. Time and again, the only books they have access to in their classrooms are old, boring, and completely unappealing. Many of the books we have in our classroom libraries are falling apart, with covers half gone, yellowing pages, and story lines from the 1980s. Not only are we lacking modern children's books, but we also lack many of the classics! My students observe and handle these books with complete disdain, and these books do very little to inspire a love of reading.

I want to change the way my students read by showing them the magic of books.

I want my student to have access to books that are engaging, with story lines that are exciting, relevant, and culturally appropriate. This grant will create magic within my classroom by making my library the place where my students are finally confronted with this "uniquely portable magic." With new books, my students will be more excited about reading and be more likely to read for pleasure. Students who read for pleasure are more likely to succeed, so why not do more to encourage this magic?

Our reading program requires that students do most of their reading work within their independent reading books. This means that the books I've ordered through this grant will quickly become filled with sticky notes scribbled with the deep thinking of a 5th grader, the big ideas and thoughts that they will be eager to share with their reading partners. It means that their reading levels will improve, and reading will finally become easy and fun, leading to increased academic success. Most importantly, these books will be the reason my students finally see the magic of books.
