A Love for Reading

My Students

Read is fundamental! I am passionate about developing a love for reading in my students and helping to continue the love of reading that some of them already have. I would like to build a classroom library that will be inviting to my students and be accessible to a wide range of reading levels.

My students live in a small rural area.

They attend one of the smallest high schools in the county. Unfortunately, even though we are a Title 1 school, we don't have any money to buy books for our students to read because we need so many other things as well. There are some who don't like to read, there are those who don't have time to read because they have to work to help support their family, and there are those who can't read because a majority of the material is above their reading level. My students need books on a variety of reading levels and topics. This year is the first year that I have ever had a group of students who actually wanted to and who liked reading and would ask for novels to read. One of my goals is to help my students learn to love reading. It is my desire that they learn that even though they are in a small rural school, there is a much bigger world out there that they can explore and learn about through reading.

My Project

I envision my students reading these books in class as well as at home. It is my hope that they go out into the school, into other classes, and home telling others about the book they just finished reading. I see my students completing book talks about these books as well as writing their own book reviews and posting them in the classroom and on the class webpage for others to see what they are reading. I believe it is important for students to have books accessible to them that interest them. I am working towards inspiring my students to become lifelong learners and forever lovers of books. My struggling readers need books that are not "baby" books. My stronger readers need books that engage and challenge them. They all need to have books that are high interest and engaging.

These books will be the building blocks towards building a strong and diverse classroom library that will appeal to all of my students.

Having a vast array of books at their fingertips will encourage my students to learn to love reading and share that love with all of those they come in contact with for the rest of their lives.
