There is nothing better than having videos and pictures to document your child's growth. Not only do we help document a parent's child's growth through video , but we are also documenting their educational growth. I am the technology and video portfolio specialist here at a K-5 magnet school that is based on Howard Gardner's theory of the 8 Multiple Intelligences.

We are three years into the opening of this additional campus of our school and are operating with limited resources. Our students are assessed based on bi-yearly presentations of theme-based projects which is then developed into a cumulative video portfolio. These portfolios represent the child's strength area in one of 8 identified intelligence areas. We archive a copy of the student's portfolio from Grades K-5 and keep these stored on DVD. Students in 5th Grade are then presented with a DVD before they leave to go on to our other campus which continues through grade 12. Currently, we do not have the equipment to duplicate these DVDs for both personal and school copies without having to re-import them into a computer that does not have the speed or space to do a lot of video editing. A professional looking DVD to present to each student upon "graduating" our school is priceless both to the student and the parent.

The materials that are needed for this project all revolve around the student being able to have a personal DVD copy of his/her video portfolio compilation. It is crucial to purchase a CD/DVD duplicator for copying the school 's video copy to the child's personal copy. This alleviates the strain of re-importing video on a computer limited to speed and storage. The purchase of 100 DVD-Rs will allow me to make copies for students over the next two years. These should be presented to the student in as professional looking manner as possible. Therefore, a CD label maker with labels and a case will make the receipt of the DVD that much more special.

I was once told by a parent that if their house was burning, the first thing they would grab is the DVD of their child's theme project presentations. It was a living scrapbook to them. Not only is the child's physical growth documented, but his/her educational growth is quite evident and a reason for parents to take pride in their child's education, due in no small part to the nurturing done by both the parents and the child's teachers. Your help will allow for our students' families to study how to assist their child in their semester theme presentation, and also give them a chance to share with their family members. This is a prime example of a village raising a child.
