Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of working with an incredible bunch of kindergarten students. They live in a community with varying socioeconomic backgrounds, but predominantly low income. The school is Title I and all students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Their families work long hours and one-third of my class stays in the after school program, while another third goes with babysitters. Now that we are all home doing our best with distance learning, WE ARE ALL HOME!

My students are the sweetest intentioned children and while they may not understand the full scope of our shelter in place, they are resilient beyond their scope.

My Project

These specifically selected books would help set ongoing opportunities for conversations about our feelings and how they change and just as importantly, the universality of having feelings. I'd like to help my students identify what they feel, give the feelings a name, and discuss ways to respond appropriately and mindfully.

Coping with distance learning, being restricted to staying home, missing family, school friends, teachers- these can be quite unsettling experiences and it is important to recognize and validate the thoughts and emotions of 5 and 6-year-olds, providing the safe outlet to explore.
