This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am writing to you in the hopes that you will help me celebrate and shine a spotlight on a section of my class that all-to-easily gets ignored in favor of the struggling kids--the ones who are ahead of their peers. I teach at an under-resourced school in a low-income area, and since I began my job teaching 3rd grade six years ago, the premium has always been paid to those in the greatest danger of being left behind. Now that we have gotten a good, firm grip on that problem, I think it is very much time treat those in my class who never need a concept or thread to be retaught a little something to spur their intellectual growth. Read-Alongs are a classroom staple that help all readers with decoding, comprehension, fluency and expansion of their knowledge base. For struggling and grade-level readers, they provide a voice to guide them through what they can't yet visually process by themselves. Over time, this practice can lead to independent comprehension of texts that previously had been too challenging. My Read-Along library is impressive, but it sorely lacks accelerated texts. Which is why I am calling upon you for help. A new kit of 12 (!) individual upper-level texts has just been put on the market, and I would love to secure one of these sets for my class. Will you make this dream a reality? Study after study has shown that kids who thrive in the beginning years of school start a dangerous drift if left unchallenged. I do so much to keep all my kids engaged, but acquiring this kit would close a gap that I've been meaning to fill for some time. Thank you for your attention!
