My Project

I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten through fifth grade in an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I-funded school, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

After the past few years of learning during the pandemic, it's no surprise that there are some gaps in students' learning. The decodable book sets and magnetic letters will be used to support the growing literacy skills of our bilingual students. The cookie sheets will be used as a magnetic surface for the magnetic letters and as trays to keep small materials like beads or math manipulatives from rolling off the table. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will be used to supplement literacy materials for small group instruction. The stretchy action figures and flying orb are hands-on items for brain breaks after long periods of work. The other odds and ends are materials to help keep the classroom space organized.
