A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This year I took on the role of a high school counselor after being an intervention specialist for the last six years. I am so passionate about my new position as our district strives to meet the social-emotional needs of our students.
In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students.
More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn and succeed. My goal is to set them up to be mindful, independent, contributing members to society.
My Project
This school year, our district has accepted Rachel's Challenge. Rachel Joy Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. After her death, many students that Rachel reached out to shared stories with the Scotts about the profound impact her simple acts of kindness had on their lives. They soon realized the transformational effect of Rachel’s story and started the non-profit organization that is Rachel's Challenge today.
Our school has accepted the challenge to create a chain reaction of kindness and compassion to make Liberty a safer, more connected place where bullying and violence are replaced with kindness and respect.
Rachel's Challenge is the foundation for creating programs that promote a positive climate in K-12 schools. With that being said, we have created something called the Friends of Rachel (FOR) Club. The club is very student-led, with the help of a counselor to facilitate. The club comes up with problems and solutions to create a safer, more connected school climate.
This specific project will allow students the opportunity to start a "Care Cart." Students will choose members of the school (custodial staff, cafeteria workers, secretaries, teachers, etc.) to focus on each week. Students will show their appreciation for each staff member by surprising them with a hand-painted banner, thank you cards, coffee, and snacks. I want our students to have the opportunity to make others feel good and in return, feel good about themselves. Our FOR Club has so much to offer, we just need the resources to reach for our goal of creating a positive change in our school.
