My Students

I'm a special education teacher in the District of Columbia. Despite my class size being small, my students work hard to achieve big goals in learning. Each day they arrive to school ready to learn and they give 100% effort in seeing the job get done. Already three months into the school year, we realize that some of the items from the previous year are in need of a replacement.

I may not be able to give my students everything that they want, but when it's possible, I am going to try.

With my students learning differently than their grade level peers, they use many different strategies for comprehension. What may work for one student may not work for another. In school, we have many of the resources needed to get the job done. However, at home, students are also in need of a few additional resources.

My Project

Funding this project will provide a class set of headphones and crayola art supplies to last us all the way until June. My students have several technology applications that they use on the computer. At times, the programs require students to have sound. The headphones will also serve as a buffer for distraction so that students are able to focus on their tasks at hand. Also, a class set allows for me to provide each students with their own headphones to keep inside of their desks. This method teaches students to be responsible and accountable for their classroom items.

Art is a form of expression that speaks to many of my students, and I want them to know that I hear them!

I have a few students who are in the art club and have demonstrated their love of visual arts. At the same time, many assignments require students to use crayons, colored pencils, or markers. For this project, we would like a classroom pack of Crayola markers and crayons! I especially love the Multicultural Crayola crayons. Using these crayons will allow my students to best represent themselves in their art, as well as their peers. The play dough is a staple that doubles as a sensory resource for my students. With them requiring alternative methods for learning, at times they made need to take a sensory break from the tasks at hand. For my students interested in art, they can use the colors of play dough to create artistic masterpieces.

We could really use your help with bringing our colorful project to life!
