This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching at a Title 1 school comes with late nights, busy Sunday's, heartaches, and headaches, but I've never felt as happy and exhilarated in my life because I have the pleasure of educating the most hard-working, kind-hearted students.

Due to our little humans' strong work ethic, our school was recently recognized by USC as one of the top public schools in Los Angeles for underserved students!

Our school is such a special, safe, and academically-rigorous place. I’ve had so many tears-eyed parents come up to me so that they can thank me for changing their kids’ attitudes toward school. At my school, kids fall in love with reading, find a safe place away from bullying, and connect with amazing teachers. On average, our students are learning about 1.5 - 2 years of content in a single year's time. At the beginning of 5th grade, 34% of my current 6th graders were proficient or exceeded in ELA. Within one year, that percentage increased to 64%.

Our school is currently moving mountains and on the verge of breaking socioeconomic barriers, and I am blessed to be a part of this incredible community of supportive faculty, parents, and students.

My Project

When my current 6th graders were in 5th grade, they participated in the daunting-to-some, yet outrageously awesome 40 BOOK CHALLENGE, which entailed reading 40 books from a variety of genres by the end of the school year. Although no one rose to victory, my students are determined to beat the challenge this year!

I want my classroom to foster students' love for reading.

After a full morning of classes that runs from 7:30 am to 12:10 pm, my students enjoy coming back from lunchtime to the classroom for their independent reading block, which is the time when they get to read their favorite book for 20 minutes.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN. I'd love to provide my kiddos with wonderful reading material, but our library is severely lacking. In order to accommodate my class of 70 students, my goal is to build a comprehensive library - with an extensive range of books covering multiple genres and reading levels.

Any and all donations would be monumental in building out a beautiful library for my current and future Libertas students!
