Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students have to take many things on faith:

1) that teachers like reading; 2) that there are books with interesting worlds; 3) that the best movies are inspired by literature and art first; 4) that reading and writing can be more than words on a page.

These are based on faith because they must themselves be willing to walk into a library or ask someone about their interests. Spectacle and ignorance of gatekeeping is the key to the capture of attention.

Miles Morales, living up to the legacy of a former Spider-Man as he embraces his Monomyth, alongside the likes of Fitzgerald, lampooning his own parasitic society. Tolkien, not as an insurmountable set of small-print volumes but as a beautiful, illustrated epic volume. Dragon Ball Z, the masterpiece science fiction pivot of the late Toriyama's initial fantasy series which took the world - but notably the Latinx and Hispanic communities through its dubs - by storm, now available in its entirety rather than the drawn-out, cliffhanger, never-ever-will-you-finish, incarnation from their childhood. Ready Player Two, a sequel to a book from their 10th grade readings.

All of these curated by the teacher, referred to in the middle of lessons, now to be recommended and teased to be in the very room they sit. All are texts I have had reason to refer to, quote, or show students in the context of English Language Arts, and I can't wait for the ability to stop amorphously alluding and begin handing a book to a student waiting for their mind to be captured.
