A Library of Their Own

My students need a rich classroom library of 46 books that will draw their attention and help them become more interested in reading. They need choices ranging from historical books and teenage romance to a plethora of classics. Reading varied material regularly will help them become better prepared for college.

Help Mrs. T.

Junior English students are eager to read! Students in our community are in need of literature that holds their interest. Some of my students have a "bad taste" in their mouth because of their previous reading/writing experiences. I have tried my best to change their attitudes toward reading and writing, but I can not do it alone. These students are very diverse, but I don't mean racially. Sure, there are different races amongst them, but what is most predominate is their backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and the choices they've made. Some of them have made choices which have gotten them in trouble with the law. We live in a moderately poverty stricken area, but regardless of their upbringing, many of them still want to go to college.

Believe it or not, when my students go to the school library to checkout books, the majority of them seem delighted to do so. There is one problem, though. The ones who so desperately need to be able to read books of their choice can't. The problem is not that they literally can't read, the problem is that they owe money to the school or library which prevents them from checking out books. If they can't afford to pay the fees, then they will never be able to check out. Having a classroom set of books will provide them with the opportunity to be able to read and better prepare themselves for college because the majority of them have voiced that they want to go to college.

Having the books at their fingertips in the classroom will enable these students to read at their own leisure, read for projects, and come across material that they never thought they'd ever be interested in before. Money will not be an issue because they will be in the classroom available when they're ready. Recently I gave my students a reading survey in class. They simply had to write one aspect of reading that they enjoyed the most. The consensus was that they can get to know the character and walk in another person's shoes. These students need this so that they will have another positive influence to help them make decisions that will affect their future.

Your help will ensure that these students will have the opportunity to read books of their choosing, appreciate new works, and open their eyes to new ways of life. Besides, reading more often will develop their vocabulary and prepare them even better for college.
