Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As teachers in a low-income school district, our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Although they face many challenges daily, my co-teacher and I are looking to provide our students with inspired and meaningful learning experiences. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Our class serves students with a range of disabilities: emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. We also have a large population of English Language Learners. This, however, does not slow them down.

Our students are full of energy and eager to learn.

We are hopeful to motivate all of our learners to continue on a path toward academic success. Our students have a ton of energy, they like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention.

My Project

We want to spark our children’s interest and enthusiasm about reading. We need books that catch their attention, captivate their imaginations and make them want to keep on reading! By providing our children access to a rich classroom library, we can encourage greater amounts of reading and more diverse reading experiences, which will help them to attain greater levels of reading achievement.

Books are the backbone to our teaching.

Much of what happens in our classroom is sparked by a great story or non-fiction text. We read to our children multiple times in a regular school day in which they are required to interact with the books through comprehension, writing like the author and for enjoyment. We incorporate diverse trade books into their reading curriculum, introducing them to the wide range of genres, authors, and topics.

We are trying to build an adequate collection of fiction and non-fiction books at different levels to accommodate the many interests and abilities of our students. By having an up-to-date classroom library with books for our children learning to read will provide them with access to meaningful and personally interesting topics and stories. A new classroom library that supports our children's daily independent and having the proper reading levels of our students will help us match our students to texts and they will be able to be read with success and therefore our students will grow as readers. Research shows that classroom libraries help students attain reading achievement. We want to provide the best opportunity for our beginning readers!
